1 Timothy 4

In chapter 4, Paul gives Timothy some instruction. The first is a lesson to teach to his congregation (verses 1-5). The second, in verses 6-11, is the alternative to verses 1-5 and what to teach to combat that. The third is some specific instruction for him as a church leader (verses 12-16).

  1. Summarize Paul’s main point from verses 1-5.

  2. God’s law is often tainted, as we see here in verses 1-5, by the sinful people of this world whether that’s doing things that aren’t required if the law by adding to it or changing it, or not doing part of the law. Can you think of examples from our world today where people improperly use God’s law?

  3. From verses 6-11 describe Paul’s argument for godliness. What is Paul’s specific command to Timothy?

  4. Paul gives Timothy a list of commands in verses 12-16 as a pastor, what are they?

  5. What can we learn from this chapter about what/how a pastor should preach?

  6. Perseverance in the faith is something that is required of believers. 1 John 3:9 says “No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.” This verse makes it clear that we cannot go on sinning as Christians. In 1 Timothy 4:16 Paul tells Timothy to keep a close watch over himself and the teaching, the goal of this being to save himself and the hearers. “Save” here would be referring to helping others to keep up their faith rather than saving them as that is only the work which Jesus Christ can do. What ways in your life shows perseverance in your faith?
